Stress Among Students In India

Stress is increasingly becoming more of a problem among students, not just in India but in other parts of the world as well. However, among individuals who are aged between fifteen and twenty-nine years, one of the highest suicide rates in the world is in India. The reasons for the high suicide rate in India are many and varied. Depression and unemployment are among the reasons. Among students in India, failing in an examination is one of the reasons for committing suicide.

Students often receive pressure from their parents to perform well in the board exams. Even before the board exams, students are pressured to perform well in school. This is often a cause of concern. Many incidents have occurred in the past where, during the day of the exam or on the day the exam results are released, students would commit suicide. Well, “Not all people who have thoughts of suicide end up acting on those thoughts. But for those who do, generally there is deep emotional pain combined with a belief that things will never improve.” Dr. Chantal Gagnon PhD LMHC explained.

Many have wondered what extreme factors would drive a student to commit suicide. Psychologists state that the fear of exams often results in students suffering from traumatic disorders and anxiety. It is this fear that is causing the students to suffer from depression, anxiety, and the consequences that follow. And this fear originates from the pressure exerted by the school and by their parents. Sometimes parents go to extreme lengths in their efforts to encourage the students to perform well in school.

School is supposed to be the best time in the life of a student. It is time they should cherish and enjoy. Unfortunately, it is a time when they are faced with extreme pressure. Many students may find this situation to be overwhelming.

Sources Of Stress

The educational system of India is blamed as one of the causes of stress for students. Many have complained against the Indian mode of education. It is often criticized for placing great emphasis on memorization. The students are usually required to endure long hours of studying systematically. This leaves very little time for socialization and recreational activities, which are essential to the proper development of the student.

The choices of colleges and universities that a student will be able to gain admission to are determined by the student’s performance in the twelfth grade. If the student chose the science stream, there is the additional stress of having to take exams from different colleges and universities. Competition for a place in these colleges and universities is very fierce.

Another source of stress for students in India is the pressure that they receive from the school and their parents. “We know many of the risk factors from poverty, trauma, maltreatment and social isolation through to bullying and the impact of excessive testing and unrealistic academic pressures,” Katie Hunt, Clinical Psychologist said. Anxiety is being felt among the students due to their fear of not performing well in their studies. This has a major negative effect on the social and academic success of the students. A student’s self-worth is often judged based on the student’s grades and academic achievement rather than on the student’s personal qualities.

To make students focus more on their studies and perform well in school, parents often prevent access to computers, mobile gadgets, the internet, and cable television. A recent survey shows that two-thirds of students report that they receive pressure from their parents to perform well in school.

Coping With Stress

Every student learns differently. Each student should develop their method of studying effectively. Teachers and parents should assist the student in developing their process of learning.

Parents should not exert any form of pressure on the student. They should not push hard for the student to get good grades during exams. They should realize that an individual’s success in life is not based solely on grades. An individual’s success depends on the actions that they choose to take and how they use the resources available to them. As Ryan M. Niemiec Psy.D. used to say, “Prior to an upcoming stressor, reflect on how much you value one of your character strengths.”

With the very fierce competition for a place in the top universities in India, students can also explore other options. If they are unable to get to a top university in India, they can consider studying in other countries such as Canada, the US, Ireland, or the UK.

Anxiety And Depression Among College Students

Being enrolled in a university is, in itself, a significant cause of anxiety and stress among college students. A student from a different country, state, or background may be overwhelmed by the immense diversity of experiences, culture, and people that they encounter in a university. It is more difficult for many students because they are cut off physically from their comfort zones and their support systems.

They are now in a new and different environment with new and different rules. Once you are in college, you are currently on your own, and you must take care of your daily needs, such as your food, laundry, bank transactions, health, and many more. Crippling depression and anxiety may result when you realize your limitations and inadequacies. “Depression and anxiety are feelings that we would want to rid ourselves of, not turn into and certainly not welcome,” explains Stacy Donn Cristo, LMHC.

Academic Pressure

Students are often confronted with a rigid academic structure. They also face pressure to perform well in exams. This system often forces the students to put too much pressure on themselves. And they often get barely any emotional assistance. The students compete against each other to achieve better grades in the belief that getting better grades would result in a better livelihood after college. They also feel constant pressure because of their concern that they are not doing enough with their time. But honestly, “The sensation of pressure doesn’t have to be negative—it can be a positive challenge and motivating.” Alicia H. Clark, Psy.D. says.

These students would take too many classes. They would join clubs, each of which requires time and energy. They would also take part-time work because they either need the money or they want their resume to look better. And there is also the pressure of maintaining a healthy social life. This often means students have to keep in touch with their family, maintain relationships, go traveling, and attend parties.

Family Pressure

Being far from your family can put a strain on your relationship with them even though you have a stable family, and you are very close to them. Students often face pressure from their parents to do well in college. They also face pressure from their parents to maintain their ideological, spiritual, and cultural identity, which may be challenging to do in a university with its immensely diverse cultural environment. And sometimes, there is also the additional stress on the student due to some unforeseen tragedy such as a sudden illness or death of a family member.

Financial Pressure

Many college students face immense pressure due to financial considerations. Most college students come from middle-class families, especially in India. This means that the cost of a college education represents a significant portion of the parents’ savings. If a student fails in college or does not do well in college, it means that a huge bulk of their parents’ savings is wasted. The cost of a college education is rapidly increasing each year, and the income of most families are not keeping up with the cost. Besides, “We all have money issues and quirks of one kind or another. If we don’t know what those quirks are, they will emerge in a time of real stress or panic.” Eric Dammann, PhD said.

Each year, more families are having a harder time paying for a college education. Worrying about finances is making more students feel stress, anxiety, and depression. They worry about the strain the cost of a college education is making on their lives. They also worry about the tension it makes in their families. Many students often take courses that they are not interested in because they believe graduating from such a course will lead to a better paying job. Studying in a college course that they are not interested in adds stress to the student.

College should be an enjoyable time in an individual’s life. Unfortunately, it is often a very stressful time. Knowing that stress is a normal part of college life can provide comfort to the student. Understanding the sources of stress can assist the student in coping with stress, anxiety, and depression in college.

Psychologists Approved: The Richness Of Dindigul Biriyani That Indian Students Should Never Forget

With hundreds of thousands of Indian-born students moving to the United States to study almost every year, it is possible that some of them have had to visit different psychologists during their stay. After all, making this decision entails leaving their friends for some time in hopes of having a better future. If they do not have relatives in the US, they are practically alone in a foreign country. To keep their loved ones from worrying back home, though, these students tend to put a happy front when talking to their parents, even though they may have a hard time adapting to the culture, food, and people. What they do instead is consult a psychologist who can hopefully help them cope with their new reality.

Nevertheless, based on personal experience as an exchange student, what is more, comforting than talking to a mental health expert is cooking the dishes that my mother used to make for me in the past. My creations may never be as good as Mom’s, but the idea of eating something that I grew up seeing is enough for me. It has allowed me not to miss my family too much and finish my studies.

Now, one of the dishes that I used to make is Dindigul biriyani.

The Richness Of Dindigul Biriyani

Biryani (also known as biriyani or biryani) is a general term used to pertain to the savory rice dish from the Indian subcontinent. And similar to how there are different kinds of chocolates, shoes, and clothes, there are also different kinds of biriyanis from various parts of India.

One exceptional variation of this is the Dindigul Biriyani, which has originated more than 50 years back from Dindigul, a town within the city of Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is a non-vegetarian main course that is unlike the biryanis from Hyderabad, Calcutta, Kerala, Bombay, and Gujarat, to name a few. It does not look as elaborate as the others, to be honest. However, if there is anything that life has taught us, it is that the beauty of someone – or something, in this case – comes from deep within.

Below are some of the ingredients that make Dindigul Biryani a showstopper in its own right.

Jeera Samba Rice

Jeera Samba is a rice variety which is commonly grown and harvested in the Southern part of India, especially in Tamil Nadu. It has shorter grain than the fragrant Basmati rice and is preferable to use for this kind of biryani. The reason is that the latter already has a distinct taste and smell due to its less starchiness. The former, meanwhile, does not taste like anything. Hence, Jeera Samba is more capable of captivating the aroma of the flavors in every grain.

Smaller Cuts Of Meat

Although several biryanis have chunks of meat (with or without bone) integrated to them, the Dindigul Biriyani contains smaller pieces of meat to give it a divergent taste. Whether you use mutton, chicken, or beef, the larger cuts will generally be more difficult to soften and get infused with different flavors. On the other hand, the spices will quickly become ingrained within the tiny cubes of meat that can melt in your as you eat. Since the meat is deboned initially for this dish, and there is not a single part of it thrown away, the plate of rice will be as good as new after you finish the food.

Pepper

Whereas various biryani dishes rely heavily on curry, masala, and cardamom to spice them up, the recipe from Dindigul is not timid about using a generous amount of pepper. It can downright invigorate your body and give you extra energy to get through the day. Pepper is also an ingredient that turns the dish into a diverse food experience for biryani lovers.

Curd And Lemon

Aside from the flaming hot taste of this rice dish, it is also famous for its tanginess. The strong acidic flavor comes from curd and lemon, which are staple constituents when creating the Dindigul Briyani. Lemon is a common citrus fruit, while the curd is far from being yogurt – another ingredient for other biriyanis. After all, the former only has one good bacteria, while the latter has two.

In Conclusion

You may try to say that the biriyani in India is much different from what you can make in the US, and that may be true. The spices are somehow fresher in your home country. You get to add other ingredients and share it with your loved ones, too. Nevertheless, your desire to have a better shot at a better life may be stronger than your dream of coming home right now. Just don’t forget the taste of Dindigul biryani so that you can feel like you’re back in your beloved country even for a short while.

Good luck!

Teachers And Therapists On Integrated Therapy

Integrated therapy is similar to traditional treatment that is focused on guidelines and policies of the related services professions. Just like conventional therapy, this includes various levels of support and degrees of services. It accommodates, modifies, compensates and reduces the effects of learning disabilities so a student can get the most out of special education. Just like traditional therapy, goals are written based on the individual’s needs; therapists will confirm this.

“Therapy is right for anyone who is interested in getting the most out of their life by taking responsibility, creating greater self-awareness, and working towards change in their lives.” –Chris Corbett, PsyD.

Higher Education – What Is It All About?

Source: flickr.com

There are tons of factors why a large number of students stop before completing a University. It could be due to financial problems, family issues, social status, mental and physical health, and so on. Sometimes, only a couple of people are fortunate to enter a tertiary level. And if lucky enough, finish a whole course. Even if education gets very expensive, investing in it is always a great choice. It provides individuals’ the skills they need to fit in the challenges in the labor market and society. It unleashes one’s potential, supports better job qualification, promotes high paying positions, and gives most social benefits. With all of these reasons, some are still wondering why exactly a higher education becomes a good investment.

Why Higher Education Seems To Lose Its Edge?

With all the handed out positive things about higher education, there are still some people who don’t value its importance. Well, not that they don’t know what it is for, but some factors make them stick to what they believe. Primarily, that is due to the financial burden. The complaints of economic issue increases as years of education continue to become technologically advanced. The tuitions vastly outstripped the consumer index into an additional percentage that even surpasses the spiraling rise of housing development and healthcare system.

Another issue that higher education is also facing is “change.” Tons of volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous situations seem to get included in it. People need to figure out what essential factors need attention for the institution to cope up with unpredictable life and school challenges. Presumably, higher education is not at all about teaching and learning but rather in-depth with application and result. But that’s only a few summaries of the whole opposition. Because until now, education is still the solution for most of the world’s societal issues.

Education Is Increasingly Important In Today’s World

People may not entirely need to solve everything, but they need to think through tough problems, gather facts, and evaluate information. They cannot expect that there’s always a gratification in higher education. However, the focus talks more about sustained effort, knowledge, and mental strength. It teaches the value of discipline in every hard work.

Higher education opens doors that provide people with a wide array of possibilities, particularly in job opportunities. Among other countries, the people who completed an upper secondary up to tertiary levels get employed. And every year, the high number of professionals that obtained a bachelor’s degree continues to rise. On average, across a lot of countries in the world, the financial return over those professionals who finished tertiary education is twice as significant as to those who only have an upper secondary education.

Not only higher education provides a better salary for an individual from corporate companies, but it also benefits society as well. That is because these professionals create a significant amount of social contributions and tax revenues. The economy seems to get a hold of addressing future financial crisis because the highly educated individuals provide quality services. With this, the success of the economy becomes dependent on the people that are beneficial for the advancement of the community.

Higher educational attainment also translates into more enhanced personal development. It teaches individuals to learn “how to value learning” and find solutions in the unexpected challenges in life. With the right education both at school and home, there’s always a possibility of becoming a significant contributor to other people’s overall well-being. And by that, it aims to create a valuable solution to whatever crisis there may be in the society’s demands. It supports an understanding, creativity, and courage, beneficial for individuals’ roles in the future.

In a diverse culture that sees life indifferently, individuals with higher education have more progress in the business realm as well. The training and knowledge they gain provide them an edge over those people under the secondary level. With the knowledge, training, and life experiences, higher education offers a more significant chance of industrial improvement which is also beneficial to the maintenance of a sustainable entrepreneurial world.

Since people believe that a college education is a ticket for future prosperity, so they thrive to attain it at all cost. Well, perhaps it is. There are lots of exciting things about getting a higher education because it allows the readiness for growth.

People need to remember that the future belongs to those people who prepare for it today. They need to become more sophisticated on the things they can do to become more helpful to their selves, their family, and to the community. So if there is a chance that education is at reach, they should grab it. That’s because obtaining a higher education is all about the best interest of the development of the students and their future contribution.
