Department of History

The Department of History was established in
December 1987. From its inception , the Department has been offering
M.Phil. and Ph.D. course. Since 1992 it has been offering M.A. and
M.Phil. programmes under the Choice Based Credit System. The
Department is carrying our teaching and research in Soci-Economic
History of Medieval India, History and Historical Geography of
Medieval South India, social and Intellectual History of Modern
India, History of Freedom Struggle in India, Indo-French Studies,
Philosophy of History and Historiography and Women’s History. The
Department also includes a Centre for Canadian studies, established
in 1991 by the UGC in collaboration with the Shastri Indo-Canadian
Institute, New Delhi. Our alumini are positioned in reputed central
and state educational institutions and also form part of the Civil
service cadres. The revised curriculum makes it possible for
students to have comprehensive as well as in-depth knowledge in
history so as to enable them to clear competitive examination like
UGC NET and Civil Service Examinations and take up administrative,
teaching and research careers with confidence in future. The details

Entrance Examination
For the P.G. programme, the admission will be based on the
performance in the entrance examination.
The entrance examination will consists of three parts ; multiple
choice type questions for 50 marks; short answer type (200 words)
for 20 marks; and essay type ( 600 words ) for 30 marks.
The question would be at the graduate level, testing the students
comprehensive understanding of the ancient, medival and modern
periods of Inidan History.
Ph.D.
The entrance examination will consist of multiple choice type
questions for 30 marks and descriptive for 70 marks. The questions
will be of the P.G. level. Testing the candidate’s ability for
historical analysis, and critical study and in-depth understanding
of histography (Western and Indian) and history of India.
