Computer
Centre
|
The Computer
Centre was established in the year 1992
under a grant from the UGC. As a central facility, it caters
to
the needs of various schools, departments, centres and administrative
sections of the University. The computer centre staff facilitate
conduct of theory, laboratory courses and project guidance for students
of various departments. Placement services were offered to the
Department of Computer Science.
Intranet
The campus-wide computer network – Intranet links all
buildings
and therein the schools/departments/centres/sections on the main campus
of the university through Optic Fibre Cable (OFC) backbone, high-speed
CISCO switches and router. Recently, far flung departments on
the
campus and the Culture-cum-Convention Centre & Guest House were
connected to the intranet by wireless mode. About 600
workstations across the University are connected to this network.
Every faculty member, offices of the Deans, Department Heads,
Administrative Officers, Library, and at least one class room in each
department are connected to the intranet.
This intranet serves as the “Information Highway”
of the
University offering a variety of services to the campus community. It is
also proposed to connect, in near future, the
off-campus
centres /units of the University to the intranet. Currently, the
services, offered over this platform, are: internet, online journals
under UGC-Infonet pogramme, CD database subscription, cataloguing, etc
from Library and general computing.
Internet
4 Mbps internet access is being provided through a radio link from M/s
Software Technology Parks of India, Pondy Technopolis, Pondicherry
Engineering College campus. Any user on the campus
computer
network can have access to Internet. E-mail access is
provided to
all faculty, staff and research scholars. This is provided all through
the year on 24 x 7 basis.
UGC-Infonet
The Centre is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the
VSAT link of UGC-Infonet. The services available under
UGC-Infonet are offered to the University community using the
Intranet. Access to about 7000 online journals are made
available. A large number of research scholars have registered
substantial progress in their research work due to this facility.
EDUSAT
The Computer Centre has undertaken the responsibility of establishment
and maintenance of EDUSAT facility provided by the UGC CEC. This is a
tripartite arrangement with ISRO, UGC and participating institutions
across the country. The Satellite Interactive Terminal ( SIT)
was recently established and shortly the services under
EDUSAT
would be made available to the university community. This would provide
access to participate in or conduct expert live/recorded classroom
sessions to be telecast through EDUSAT network across the nation.
Preparation of e-learning materials and access to the huge repository
of such materials from the national pool are features of this project.
University
Automation
The Computer Centre would soon implement University
Automation
system that would usher in e-governance practices. The software is
ready ( data collection, porting of the collected data, validation of
processes are in progress), powerful database server clusters with
external storage, etc, were procured and commissioned. This project
would be completed on a priority basis before the end of this calendar
year.
