Causes Of Stress Especially Among Students In India

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) researched the increasing suicide cases in India among students to indicate the World Suicide Prevention Day observed on September 10. The study has shown that approximately 11 percent of students in college and about 7 to 8 percent of students in high school have attempted killing themselves. The survey is composed of 1,500 school and college students.

It was also discovered that 20 percent of the children are almost depressed, and approximately 30 percent had depression, which ranges from mild to moderate.

Various Incidents Are Often Caused By Stress From Tests And Study

In an unusual occurrence, a student composed his suicide note in his assessment paper, expressing that he was not able to adapt to the weight of his examinations. A young lady studying for intermediate exams has hacked off her hands by laying them under the wheels of a train. She then passed away because of non-stop bleeding. She explained that she had done seriously in Maths and was reprimanded at home.

“Not all people who have thoughts of suicide end up acting on those thoughts. But for those who do, generally there is deep emotional pain combined with a belief that things will never improve.” Dr. Chantal Gagnon PhD LMHC.

Some Of The Reasons

Let us investigate to check whether there are some different reasons aside from tests. Here is a couple of them:

1. Contradiction among mental and physical formative changes

In an exploration paper – Stress Level and Coping Strategies of College Students – that was distributed in the Journal of Physical Education and Sports Management, and the creators made an intriguing point. They proposed that as the students experience physical and mental improvement during their school period, a few may see that their psychological advancement is contrary to their physical progress, or so far as that is concerned mental advancement being incongruent with their social environment. Thus, they start to experience the ill effects of issues that rise up because of deficient adjustments.

“A stressful change in life patterns can trigger a depressive episode. Such stressful events may include a serious loss, a difficult relationship, trauma, or financial problems.” –Ben Martin, Psy.D.

The paper proceeds to further include that these issues would then prompt mental issues on students.

2. We are putting a lot of weight on them by performing various tasks that many are not ready to adapt with

The general improvement of kids today is ahead of what it used to be decades back. Likewise, it is beneficial to note that various kids have numerous methods for responding to circumstances. While some may take stress in their pace, others may feel troubled.

3. Role of peers as stress-buster is inaccessible today

Two years back, the Indian Institutes of Technology had got into a drive to comprehend the different pressure causing highlights in their students. One of the key issues that surfaced was students’ developing closeness with PCs. The youngsters remain, for the most part, mainly limited to their PCs, because of which collaboration among students is decreasing. The issues that prior could have been comprehended through talking with companions currently remain inside themselves, which at that point gradually develop into more concerning issues.

4. Parents turning kids as a way of making their unfulfilled dreams a reality

It is the goal of parents to see their kids exceed expectations in all things. All the while, the parents start to gradually put weight on the youngsters to point higher each time – be it in their academics or some other movement. While this is great, the issue starts when there is a jumble in desires. The parents may need the kids to perform in a specific way while the kid may discover their bringing in some other areas. It is then that this demeanor ends up undesirable.

“Examine your expectations based on your own childhood and adjust as needed.” –Cynthia Ridgway, MA, LMHC, NCC, DCC

Would it be a good idea for us to do the matter of talking about stress or attempting to prevent it?

Steps are being taken toward avoidance of stress. Numerous establishments, universities, and schools are paying attention to stress management and have included it in their educational programs. A couple of years back, the Indian Institutes of Management had welcomed Kathak maestro Birju Maharaj to clarify the job of music and dance as a stress reliever. Birju Maharaj proceeded to include that music and dance can surely help monitor profession objectives in a profoundly focused condition.

Last 2006, the CBSE had started projects to handle depression in youngsters. They had tied up with the Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (VIMHANS) to set up the educational program. The main point was to focus on the emotional wellness of a kid since that was the primary way a kid can be guaranteed perfect general development.

While organizations center around tasks and activities, mainly because that is the thing that foundations are practically speaking of, families and parents can make precious commitments as far as anticipating the causation components of stress from happening to their kids. That is if we care for the psychological and physical strength of our kids for a steady life ahead of them.

What each parent ought to do, first and last, is to become understanding to the child. At that point, be its source of power. Furthermore, instill trust. Give the child a chance to be without anyone else. It is about your kid exceeding expectations throughout everyday life, not only in school!

Stress Among Students In India

Stress is increasingly becoming more of a problem among students, not just in India but in other parts of the world as well. However, among individuals who are aged between fifteen and twenty-nine years, one of the highest suicide rates in the world is in India. The reasons for the high suicide rate in India are many and varied. Depression and unemployment are among the reasons. Among students in India, failing in an examination is one of the reasons for committing suicide.

Students often receive pressure from their parents to perform well in the board exams. Even before the board exams, students are pressured to perform well in school. This is often a cause of concern. Many incidents have occurred in the past where, during the day of the exam or on the day the exam results are released, students would commit suicide. Well, “Not all people who have thoughts of suicide end up acting on those thoughts. But for those who do, generally there is deep emotional pain combined with a belief that things will never improve.” Dr. Chantal Gagnon PhD LMHC explained.

Many have wondered what extreme factors would drive a student to commit suicide. Psychologists state that the fear of exams often results in students suffering from traumatic disorders and anxiety. It is this fear that is causing the students to suffer from depression, anxiety, and the consequences that follow. And this fear originates from the pressure exerted by the school and by their parents. Sometimes parents go to extreme lengths in their efforts to encourage the students to perform well in school.

School is supposed to be the best time in the life of a student. It is time they should cherish and enjoy. Unfortunately, it is a time when they are faced with extreme pressure. Many students may find this situation to be overwhelming.

Sources Of Stress

The educational system of India is blamed as one of the causes of stress for students. Many have complained against the Indian mode of education. It is often criticized for placing great emphasis on memorization. The students are usually required to endure long hours of studying systematically. This leaves very little time for socialization and recreational activities, which are essential to the proper development of the student.

The choices of colleges and universities that a student will be able to gain admission to are determined by the student’s performance in the twelfth grade. If the student chose the science stream, there is the additional stress of having to take exams from different colleges and universities. Competition for a place in these colleges and universities is very fierce.

Another source of stress for students in India is the pressure that they receive from the school and their parents. “We know many of the risk factors from poverty, trauma, maltreatment and social isolation through to bullying and the impact of excessive testing and unrealistic academic pressures,” Katie Hunt, Clinical Psychologist said. Anxiety is being felt among the students due to their fear of not performing well in their studies. This has a major negative effect on the social and academic success of the students. A student’s self-worth is often judged based on the student’s grades and academic achievement rather than on the student’s personal qualities.

To make students focus more on their studies and perform well in school, parents often prevent access to computers, mobile gadgets, the internet, and cable television. A recent survey shows that two-thirds of students report that they receive pressure from their parents to perform well in school.

Coping With Stress

Every student learns differently. Each student should develop their method of studying effectively. Teachers and parents should assist the student in developing their process of learning.

Parents should not exert any form of pressure on the student. They should not push hard for the student to get good grades during exams. They should realize that an individual’s success in life is not based solely on grades. An individual’s success depends on the actions that they choose to take and how they use the resources available to them. As Ryan M. Niemiec Psy.D. used to say, “Prior to an upcoming stressor, reflect on how much you value one of your character strengths.”

With the very fierce competition for a place in the top universities in India, students can also explore other options. If they are unable to get to a top university in India, they can consider studying in other countries such as Canada, the US, Ireland, or the UK.

Teachers And Therapists On Integrated Therapy

Integrated therapy is similar to traditional treatment that is focused on guidelines and policies of the related services professions. Just like conventional therapy, this includes various levels of support and degrees of services. It accommodates, modifies, compensates and reduces the effects of learning disabilities so a student can get the most out of special education. Just like traditional therapy, goals are written based on the individual’s needs; therapists will confirm this.

“Therapy is right for anyone who is interested in getting the most out of their life by taking responsibility, creating greater self-awareness, and working towards change in their lives.” –Chris Corbett, PsyD.

Higher Education – What Is It All About?

Source: flickr.com

There are tons of factors why a large number of students stop before completing a University. It could be due to financial problems, family issues, social status, mental and physical health, and so on. Sometimes, only a couple of people are fortunate to enter a tertiary level. And if lucky enough, finish a whole course. Even if education gets very expensive, investing in it is always a great choice. It provides individuals’ the skills they need to fit in the challenges in the labor market and society. It unleashes one’s potential, supports better job qualification, promotes high paying positions, and gives most social benefits. With all of these reasons, some are still wondering why exactly a higher education becomes a good investment.

Why Higher Education Seems To Lose Its Edge?

With all the handed out positive things about higher education, there are still some people who don’t value its importance. Well, not that they don’t know what it is for, but some factors make them stick to what they believe. Primarily, that is due to the financial burden. The complaints of economic issue increases as years of education continue to become technologically advanced. The tuitions vastly outstripped the consumer index into an additional percentage that even surpasses the spiraling rise of housing development and healthcare system.

Another issue that higher education is also facing is “change.” Tons of volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous situations seem to get included in it. People need to figure out what essential factors need attention for the institution to cope up with unpredictable life and school challenges. Presumably, higher education is not at all about teaching and learning but rather in-depth with application and result. But that’s only a few summaries of the whole opposition. Because until now, education is still the solution for most of the world’s societal issues.

Education Is Increasingly Important In Today’s World

People may not entirely need to solve everything, but they need to think through tough problems, gather facts, and evaluate information. They cannot expect that there’s always a gratification in higher education. However, the focus talks more about sustained effort, knowledge, and mental strength. It teaches the value of discipline in every hard work.

Higher education opens doors that provide people with a wide array of possibilities, particularly in job opportunities. Among other countries, the people who completed an upper secondary up to tertiary levels get employed. And every year, the high number of professionals that obtained a bachelor’s degree continues to rise. On average, across a lot of countries in the world, the financial return over those professionals who finished tertiary education is twice as significant as to those who only have an upper secondary education.

Not only higher education provides a better salary for an individual from corporate companies, but it also benefits society as well. That is because these professionals create a significant amount of social contributions and tax revenues. The economy seems to get a hold of addressing future financial crisis because the highly educated individuals provide quality services. With this, the success of the economy becomes dependent on the people that are beneficial for the advancement of the community.

Higher educational attainment also translates into more enhanced personal development. It teaches individuals to learn “how to value learning” and find solutions in the unexpected challenges in life. With the right education both at school and home, there’s always a possibility of becoming a significant contributor to other people’s overall well-being. And by that, it aims to create a valuable solution to whatever crisis there may be in the society’s demands. It supports an understanding, creativity, and courage, beneficial for individuals’ roles in the future.

In a diverse culture that sees life indifferently, individuals with higher education have more progress in the business realm as well. The training and knowledge they gain provide them an edge over those people under the secondary level. With the knowledge, training, and life experiences, higher education offers a more significant chance of industrial improvement which is also beneficial to the maintenance of a sustainable entrepreneurial world.

Since people believe that a college education is a ticket for future prosperity, so they thrive to attain it at all cost. Well, perhaps it is. There are lots of exciting things about getting a higher education because it allows the readiness for growth.

People need to remember that the future belongs to those people who prepare for it today. They need to become more sophisticated on the things they can do to become more helpful to their selves, their family, and to the community. So if there is a chance that education is at reach, they should grab it. That’s because obtaining a higher education is all about the best interest of the development of the students and their future contribution.
